Winter Garden
Settlers started arriving in Winter Garden around the 1850s. In hopes of farming citrus and vegetables, the fertile lands near Lake Apopka drew many farmers. The small lakefront settlements eventually saw the rise of a business district supported by two railroad lines that ran through the city. Post two devastating fires, the town's commercial structures were reconstructed in brick.
Incorporated in 1908 with A.B. Newton as its first mayor, Winter Garden's population surpassed 1,000 by 1920, becoming a hub for commerce and agriculture. Its status as a prime fishing destination led to tourism growth, necessitating accommodations like the 1927-built Edgewater Hotel.
The late 20th century witnessed a decline in development with environmental challenges and new highways shifting business focus. However, the city retained its architectural essence and revitalized its historic downtown, which was recognized in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 due to conservation efforts.
Today, Winter Garden’s Historic District stands as a vibrant center of history, commerce, and community, attracting global attention for its successful preservation, repurposing of buildings and revitalization.
